5 Centimeters per Second (2007)

Written and directed by Makoto Shinkai, 5 Centimeters per Second follows Takaki and Akari from childhood into adulthood as distance, time and missed opportunities gradually pull them apart. Told across three interconnected chapters, the film explores first love, longing and the difficulty of moving on from relationships that continue to shape us. The anime predates Shinkai’s later films Your Name. and Weathering with You and already centres on the emotional distance between people that became a recurring element of his work.
