Directed by Glauber Rocha, Black God, White Devil follows impoverished ranch hand Manoel and his wife Rosa as they flee across Brazil’s sertão after Manoel kills his exploitative employer. Their journey takes them first into the orbit of a violent religious prophet and later to a band of cangaceiros led by Corisco. A landmark of Brazil’s Cinema Novo movement, the film competed at the 1964 Cannes Film Festival.
