Directed by Michael Haneke, Funny Games stars Naomi Watts and Tim Roth as a couple whose stay at their lakeside holiday home turns into a nightmare when two seemingly polite young men take the family hostage. Michael Pitt and Brady Corbet play the intruders, who subject their victims to a series of cruel psychological and physical games while deliberately challenging the audience’s expectations of screen violence. Haneke remade his own 1997 film almost shot-for-shot, retaining its disturbing mixture of home-invasion horror, suspense and self-aware manipulation.
