Directed by Ettore Scola, A Special Day (1977) is an intimate Italian drama set in Rome during the day of Hitler’s state visit in 1938. The film follows a brief encounter between a housewife and a radio broadcaster whose lives expose the personal costs of fascism, conformity, and repression. Anchored by performances from Sophia Loren and Marcello Mastroianni, the movie is a quiet but powerful portrait of private resistance within a totalitarian society.

A very delicate, funny and moving story of the encounter between two people who are poles apart. Beautifully directed by Ettore Scola, it won the Golden Globe for best foreign film.  Set in 1938 during Adolf Hitler visit to Mussolini, it tells the story of Antonietta (Sophia Loren) a working class housewife, left alone by her family who like most people in Rome went to the parade, meets the only other person left in their block, Gabriele (Marcello Mastroianni) a persecuted homosexual radio announcer.  They strike an unexpectedly close friendship that will change their perceptions of love, politics and life itself.
