Daiei Film, founded in 1942 in Osaka, was a major Japanese studio active during the postwar golden age of cinema. Known internationally for Akira Kurosawa's Rashomon (1950), which won the Golden Lion in Venice, Daiei also produced the Gamera kaiju series and acclaimed period dramas like Kenji Mizoguchi's Ugetsu (1953).
